That simple motivation already feels more grounded than many fantasy series released over the last few years.
Dungeons Become a Career, Not a Playground
One detail I immediately appreciated is how dungeon exploration is presented.
Instead of functioning as a convenient leveling system, dungeons are essentially a profession. They’re dangerous workplaces where people risk their lives because they have no better options.
Mercedes understands this from childhood.
She trains relentlessly, studies every possible advantage her vampire body gives her, and approaches combat like someone solving problems rather than showing off.
That difference changes the tone considerably.
Rather than asking, ’How quickly can she become overpowered?’, the story constantly asks:
- Can she protect her family?
- Can she build financial independence?
- Can she survive long enough to escape her family’s political trap?
Those questions feel much more interesting than chasing another unbeatable protagonist.
The First Trailer Sets the Right Mood
The debut promotional video doesn’t reveal everything, but it does establish exactly what kind of experience viewers should expect.
The visual direction leans heavily into shadows, abandoned corridors, cold stone environments, and tense action instead of colorful fantasy spectacle. Even the combat shown in the trailer emphasizes precision over explosive magic attacks.
Mercedes doesn’t look reckless.
She looks prepared.
That’s an important distinction.
I also like that the trailer avoids overselling emotional scenes. Instead of flooding viewers with dramatic speeches, it quietly builds an atmosphere where every victory appears earned.
If Studio Teddy can maintain this balance throughout the season, the adaptation could end up surprising a lot of people.
Why the Staff Gives Me Confidence
Anime adaptations live or die because of the people making them.
Looking through the production staff, there are several reasons to be optimistic.

She’s supposed to be constantly adapting.
That balance between vulnerability and stubborn determination is something Nagase has handled well before, making her a natural fit for this role.
If the writing stays faithful to the novels, her performance could become one of the highlights of the Winter 2027 season.
The Light Novel Already Built a Strong Foundation
Unlike many recent anime announcements attached to relatively new web novels, Mercedes and the Waning Moon already has several years of history behind it.
The series began as a web novel before moving into official light novel publication, eventually receiving its own manga adaptation as its audience continued to grow.
That gradual growth usually tells me one thing.
People kept reading because the story maintained momentum, not because it relied on a flashy opening premise.
That’s encouraging.

My Early Impression
I’ve watched enough adaptation announcements over the years to know that trailers can be misleading.
Still, this one left me cautiously optimistic.
The anime isn’t trying to convince viewers that Mercedes is the strongest vampire ever born. It’s presenting her as someone forced to fight because failure simply isn’t an option.
That immediately makes her more relatable than many fantasy protagonists.
If Studio Teddy preserves that grounded approach, keeps the pacing steady, and lets the emotional moments breathe naturally, Mercedes and the Waning Moon could become one of Winter 2027’s biggest dark fantasy success stories.
It’s definitely staying on my watchlist, and I have a feeling it won’t remain an under-the-radar title for very long.
